I am a Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ) based in Sydney, with extensive corporate experience across both professional services (at a Big 4 accounting firm) and commercial businesses. While employed, I also dedicated significant time to side projects, helping numerous businesses streamline their operations by building spreadsheets, analysing data, and automating processes.
Early in my career, I learned VBA (Excel Macros) to automate accounting and finance workpapers. This allowed me to reduce manual input, ensuring more accurate and consistent results. As I recognized the immense potential of automation, I expanded my skills beyond spreadsheets and delved into Python programming. With Python, I automated tasks like website browsing and cloud accounting processes, which not only saved hundreds of labor hours but also enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of the final outputs.
A client approached us with a request to automate the process of gathering soccer game data to aid in his betting decisions. We started by discussing his current workflow to understand his challenges. He was manually searching for upcoming games on Bing.com, then spending hours performing several checks—such as looking for predictions, analysing team rankings, goals, losses, and draws—before making any decisions.
To streamline this, we built a Python script that automated the entire process, significantly reducing the time spent and eliminating errors common in manual data entry. Not only did this improve the accuracy of his predictions, but it also sped up the workflow.
Taking it a step further, we enhanced the system by scraping betting odds from a sports betting website, providing him with an additional layer of valuable data. We also included direct links to each game, allowing him to quickly access the relevant betting pages without the need to search.
The client was impressed with the results, sharing this feedback: "Adding the sports bet odds is a genius idea. You're so clever and so good at what you do."
Gamarada Universal Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd (GUIR) specialises in the promotion of personal, professional and organisational performance in private, government, and community sectors. GUIR works to promote community cohesion with a focus on marginalised groups such as youth who may be at risk of radicalism.
As part of their requirement for funding as a Not-For-Profit, GUIR is required to report on specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
We partnered with the business to build a reporting system to track these KPIs, and provide regular reporting services to assist them with their periodic reporting requirements.
Xpress 2U Couriers, a Gold Coast-based courier business, approached us to get help on understanding the profitability of each of their service offerings, with a view to revise their pricing structure or restructure of their offerings.
We found that the jobs within one of the service offerings were being reported as unprofitable, which was actually not the case and could've lead to the wrong business decision. The business applied a simple rule that each job will have a fixed cost assigned to it, but for this particular service offering, multiple jobs will performed together in a single trip, which significantly reduced the cost per job. What was seen as the most unprofitable service offering was actually the most profitable for the business.
In addition to performing the requested pricing analysis, we derived a new reporting solution to more accurately reflect the lower costs of these jobs for the business's future reporting and analysis purposes.
We worked with Any Asset Finance to help them build a calculator to be used in their client meetings to show the costs savings of installing solar panels into their client's homes.
This spreadsheet was built so that they could fill in the inputs, record the inputs and outputs within a spreadsheet (like a database), and also create professional quotations (in PDF) which they could share with their clients.
Another consideration that the client valued was the inability for others to take a copy of this template. The file was very made particularly secure, using Macros/VBA (that would delete the contents of the file if it identified certain conditions were not met) and other protections.
